The Noise can be the Timing chain issue.
The only thing i have seen that fits your description would be the timing chain tensioner. If it intermittently is not working correctly it could cause noises like this.
The ticking or click sound coming from the passenger side of the engine could very well be something in the timing chain or the tensioner. This engine was notorious to have water pump issues. Have the bearing inspected on the water pump and the bearing on the alternator for excessive noise. Usually this would be a growling or rotational noise vs. a ticking or clicking noise.
The details mentioned are to be inspected.
This will help.
Thanks.
